Many years ago the idea of anonymous restaurant ratings was discussed among a group of friends. Formed as the “gastric 7” this group quickly turned to food and whine… er… wine. Thus, Screwtops was formed.

From this group, JT and Charles started the Screwtops podcast as well as the online reviewing systems. Soon, we’ll allow our members to enter their own reviews of beers to help us build an objective database of beer and wine review.

Our first show was taped on New Years Eve 2004. It aired shortly after. From there things progressed with a high show density until JT was transferred to China. Needless to say, putting shows together with 12 hours difference and a completely different beer selection was challenging at best.

ScrewtopsThe Screwtops website was established long before the podcast was created. In its early times, it focused primarily on wines. Obviously, this has changed to include beer as well as the occasional spirit. Several iterations later, what you see now is our current offering.

JT has since returned to the states and with a lot of conversation relating to this site and podcast, we’re back at it cutting and recording new shows all of the time. Shows, however, will be released when ready without a specific schedule. The same goes for posted reviews. We’ll do what we can when we can, but please keep in mind that this is a hobby for us. When the time presents itself, content will be delivered.

We do this mainly for fun and to help others share their knowledge. Our hope is to establish a community of beer and wine lovers.

On this site, you’ll find reviews of primarily beer and wine. Most beer reviewed will be from specialty or micro-breweries as Charles and I are tired of “mass market beer”

Mass Market beer is defined as beer that’s developed, brewed and supported by huge marketing juggernauts. To our palates, micro-breweries offer a far better quality beer for similar prices. Support your local brewers and wineries.

Our reviews will attempt to look at five areas: Color, Smell, Taste, Mouthfeel and Drinkability. We feel these five criteria allow a full exploration of the experience of the beer or the wine. We’re working on the database format for the overall site so we can present our best/worst lists among others.

We remind you that every palate is different. Charles and JT have differing palates so it’s a decent probability that yours differs as well. Thus, the importance of the multiple review concept. Our forum areas are open for discussion of our reviews and podcasts. Feel free to setup an account and use them!
