The 10 Year Anniversary Brew from Iron Hill is now available, at least in the Media, PA location. For those across the country, Iron Hill is a small chain of Brew-Pubs that offers solid beer for the beer enjoying public in the brew pub model. They describe it as a "dark Belgian style abbey ale."
Admittedly, this review is a bit rushed, and I'd like to get back to re-taste the beer. When that happens, an updated review will be published.
This 10 year anniversary brew is based upon the beer that started the Iron Hill Brewing company. This Mid-Atlantic region company continually offers solid brews at reasonable prices. Below is a review of this beer.
Color (possible 5 points) - 4 - This beer presents a very deep rich color. Head was large when poured but quickly subsided to the standard minimal head. Fine bubbles persisted around the rim.
Smell (possible 5 points) - 4 - A very sweet, malty aroma was presented. Thick almost comes to mind with a syrupy feel, but not in a bad way. The aroma clearly identifies this beer as one with body, flavor with staying power.
Taste (possible 10 points) - 8 - Minor after taste, but a pleasant, strongly flavored beer. I noticed a bit of a sweetness to this beer. While not unpleasant, it moved away from a session drinker due to the heaviness and sweetness of it’s body and flavor. That being said, it easily stood its own against a plate of Hummus and Nachos. There was a hint of smokiness as well.
Mouthfeel (possible 5 points) - 4 - Great level of carbination was maintained throughout the glass, not too much, not too little. It was smooth on the palate with a touch of smokiness in the beers flavor. It was tad thick and sweet as well.
Drinkability (possible 10 points) - 8 - This beer will go down easily but might be a little heavy as a session drinker. I found it a little too sweet for a session drinker, but it would be perfect to end an evening. This bear was very enjoyable. It matched well with the Humus I ordered and certainly had enough strength to cut through the heaviness of the hummus, olives and feta cheese.
A very respectable 28 out of 35 points for this beer. It will likely score higher on a second run. Hopefully, I'll get to revise this review this week.
Recommended.
