John Harvard's - West Coast Stout (26 points) E-mail

John Harvard's is a semi local, east coast brew pub. They've been around in my area for several years. Recently I was in the Wayne, PA pub and enjoyed several beers. Of note, the West Coast Stout.

The beer was consumed straight from a tap right there at the brewery. Brew pubs have the advantage of perfect storage and transportation (none) of the beer. Personally, I've always felt beer was best in this environment.

John Harvard's has been brewing beer in the East Coast region for quite some time. In May, that day was sunny and spring was in the air. That being said, there was a chill in the air which lead me to the stout.

""This medium-full bodied ale has a deep, black color and a deliciously roasty flavor. Quite hoppy for a stout, there is an abundance of centennial hop bite and aroma in this beer." - John Harvard's Menu

Color (possible 5 points) - 4 - Nice, dark beer, as it should be for a stout. Long lasting head. This beer looks great in a pint glass, just begging to be consumed. After some time the head has subsided to the typical ring clinging to the side of the glass.

Smell (possible 5 points) - 4 - This stout has a roasty, malty aroma. It hints at the flavor to hit the palate.

Taste (possible 10 points) - 7 - Most stouts have a malty overtone. Some are on the hoppy side. This one has the hoppy finish with a fair amount of subtle flavor throughout the taste. For me, the hopps are a bit on the heavy side, a slight detraction, albeit a detraction for me.

Mouthfeel (possible 5 points) - 4 - This ale feels wonderful in the mouth. Light carbonation leads to a malty flavor with a bit of hops. The feel in the mouth is perfect. It's a great example of what I've come to know as a proper stout.

Drinkability (possible 10 points) - 7 - If you're not a follower of this site, I love a good stout and can basically drink one all night long. This beer would be a bit heavy for the current spring/summer season. I'd opt for something a little lighter. that being said, it's a decent beer with long term drinkability if you are a strong fan of stout.

A very respectable 26 out of 35 points for this beer. It will likely score higher for those who like a hoppy beer. If that's the case, this beer is a solid ale and one that should be tried and enjoyed.

Recommended if you like a solid stout with a bit of a hoppy finish.
